How To Ace A Panel Job Interview
How To Ace A Panel Job InterviewHow To Ace A Panel Job InterviewAs a job seeker, youve got plenty to stress about when it comes to finally getting called in for the big interview. What should you wear? Should you bring a copy of your resume? Is early really the new on time or do you just come off as desperate? These burning questions are the things that keep candidates up at night, questioning the mysteries of the employment universe. In the list of concerns, however, there is one lurking, creeping, nagging monster that interviewees dread more than others. The multi-part, panel interview. If this scenario sounds familiar, theres no need to worry. At SimplyHired weve got everything you need to ace a panel job interview.6 Tips For Acing Panel Interviews Give Individual Attention To Each Member Of The PanelAs the old wisdom goes, you dont love one child, or pet, more than the other. The same thing applies when interacting with individual members of a panel interview. Take the time to ans wer each rolles individual questions. When answering generic questions or supplying background information be koranvers to also make deliberate eye contact with all of the interviewers in turn. If your meeting will involve different levels of management, be careful to research each individual and to not focus on the senior members at the expense of the more junior participants. Bring Resumes And Business Plans For EveryoneIts always solid advice to bring an updated copy of your resume, CV, cover letter or other hiring credentials to the interview room. In panel interviews, be sure to bring enough copies for all participants. No one likes reading over another persons shoulder, and this is doubly true when youll be facing multiple question askers during the interview process. The cost of printing and/or binding any materials will be minimal and should be considered a worthy investment in your career prospects. Show Confidence and FriendlinessTheres a host of sayings that compare busin ess-oriented folks to wild animals when it comes to sensing weakness. While these colloquialisms can be a bit exaggerated, the truth of the matter is that visible nervousness or shyness is a put off for potential employers. The ideal candidate shows calm and professionalism under even the most strenuous of circumstances. In fact, its this outdated but relevant thought process that gives rise to many panel job interview formats in the first place. Practice ahead of time with friends or colleagues and keep your cool. Confidence and friendliness in the face of adversity will help make you a highly attractive candidate. Do Your Research And Come Prepared With FactsThis piece of advice is applicable to your interview, regardless of format. Research is king when it comes to preparing for interview day. Delve into details about the company history, current events, and corporate culture. You should also spend some time exploring the education and work history of each of your individual pane l interviewers on professional networking websites. Use this knowledge to pull out tangible highlights from your applicable work experience to share with the group. Having qualities that answer to the job description and your interviewees is a sure fire way to earn yourself a follow-up or job offer. Always Ask For The JobThis piece of advice also falls into the general interview tips category but takes on a special importance in the panel job interview format. Playing things cool or acting uninterested never worked when trying to score a date in high school and certainly doesnt return any dividends in the interview room. Be sure to end an interview with an expression of interest, excitement and an overall desire to hear back soon. In short, make sure that none of the individual interviewers has any doubt that youd love to receive a job offer. If there are doubts on this point, the panel members may end up discussing amongst themselves and exaggerating any deficiency. Follow Up With Each Member Of The PanelWe all know about the all-important follow-up emails after the interview. The general rule of thumb goes that you should respectfully thank every person who took the time to meet with you during the process. For panel interviewers, this means an individual email personalized for each interviewer. Try to come up with specific details or references for each person you met with. Since interviewers often compare notes on candidates, doing so will come off as professional and on top of things, greatly increasing your chances at an offer. As a final closing thought, panel interviews may seem like the big bad boogie man of job hunting, but much like the imaginary childhood foe, their hype is bigger than the reality. Panel interviews can be an efficient and effective interviewing technique. Use our handy tips and youll be seeing dividends in your preparation.

Humor Makes Meetings Better - The Muse
Humor Makes Meetings Better - The MuseHumor Makes Meetings Better Imagine a world in which meetings were not soul-sucking time blocks that made you want to prick yourself with a thumbtack just to make sure you were still alive and left you feeling like you just wasted an hour of your life. But rather, they were productive sessions that helped push projects forward, created helpful collaborations among colleagues, and were generally fun.Good news Science says its possible. Tell me mora, science.Apparently, humor may be the best medicine and the reason that some meetings are more productive than others. According to a recent study from the Journal of Applied Psychology that was covered in Science of Us (worth the full read), meetings laced with jokes and light banter were often more productive than their dull meeting counterparts. The idea is that if people are laughing and genuinely having fun, theyll be more open to ideas and collaboration. Or, as the author reports This fits with the broaden-and-build model of positive states, where a good mood opens us up to other people and different ideas- all useful in a collaborative context. Now, before you go getting any odd ideas We arent suggesting you turn your next meeting into an amateur hour stand-up comedy event. That would probably produce more cringe-worthy moments than funny ones anyway.Instead, focus on creating open, casual meetings where people feel naturally happy to be there. The obvious way to do this is by working with people you already really like. But if thats not the case (and we imagine for most of you its not), then try something else. For example, only have a meeting if its truly necessary. Nothing puts people in a bad mood more than going to a meeting that they already know will be a waste of time. At The Muse, we have weekly standing meetings. But if there is nothing that needs actual discussion or brainstorming from people in a room together, we cancel it and send updates via email, instead, so e veryone gets that time back. Or, try something totally different to departure your meetings. At a previous company I worked for, we had a Monday morning meeting in which everyone was grumpy and not in a talking mood. So, we created a new rule. Everyone had to bring one short (less than 60 seconds), funny YouTube video to play for the group. It became a badge of honor to bring the funniest video, but more importantly, it put everyone in a much more positive mood. Regardless of what you do, try to lighten up. Meetings will be more fun and productive if you take them a little less seriously.Photo of Wikimedia Commons.

Tips for Negotiating Pay with a Candidate - Spark Hire
Tips for Negotiating Pay with a Candidate - Spark HireNegotiating pay with candidates can be a pain. Frequently, candidate expectations differ from what employers are offering, and any discrepancy can cause negotiations to fall through. Here are a few tips for discussing compensation with candidates and for maintaining the upper hand in those discussions.Know the Market Price for a CandidateRemember that most job seekers will come to the negotiating table with a few ideas about what their skills are worth in the marketplace. Those ideas might be incorrect, or they might be spot on. Either way, it is important for you to know the appropriate pay for the position for which you are hiringwhich may or may not coincide with the appropriate pay for the candidate. In this job market, many candidates are applying to jobs below their experience level. Decide ahead of time whether you will be willing to pay an over-qualified candidate more money, but remember that you have to balance the positi on requirements with the candidates skills. It doesnt matter if the person is a rocket scientist. If you are just hiring them to mop the floor in the rocket ship, you likely wont ever see the candidates extra skills and you shouldnt be paying for them (ignore this advice if you reside in a Hallmark movie).Once you know the market price for a candidate, you can begin to negotiate their pay with more confidence. You will also know when to let an overconfident candidate walk out the door.Sell the Compensation PackageMany candidates will focus on their salary or hourly wage when they think about compensation. However, most companies offer a compensation package that includes health/dental insurance, vacation days, and a retirement plan. These parts of the compensation package can vary wildly, and can end up adding or subtracting thousands of dollars from an annual salary. Be sure to bring this up in your negotiations with the candidate.Prepare for CounteroffersCounteroffers can arise fr om a candidates current employer, or other companies who might be pursuing the candidate. Before a candidate leaves your office for the first time, try to cushion them against counteroffers. Perhaps mention that their current employer may try to entice them to stay with a pay increase, or some other kind of compensation. Remind the candidate about the other, non-monetary things that they enjoyed about your company. Lay the groundwork for the candidate to turn down any counteroffers.Know the Rules for Top TalentThe above rules apply to most ordinary positions within a company. As most people know, the rules can change wildly when hiring top talent for high level positions. Determine ahead of time, with multiple stakeholders, how much your company can afford to pay top talent. Further, determine how much your company needs to have certain candidates on board. Some talent can truly be priceless, so be sure to nab them with a competitive salaryThese are tips for negotiating compensation with candidates but should you negotiate at all?
